Yes, you can get an MRI after surgery, but it depends on the type of metal or device implanted during the procedure and its compatibility with the MRI machine. You must inform the MRI staff and your doctor about any prior surgeries, as some implants, like certain pacemakers or older aneurysm clips, are not safe for an MRI. However, many implants, such as most orthopaedic hardware (pins, screws, plates), are safe.

Key factors to consider

  • Implant Material: MRI uses a strong magnetic field, so metallic implants can be affected.
    • MRI-compatible implants: Many orthopedic implants (like shoulder,  hip and knee replacements) are made of MRI-safe materials like titanium and will not heat up or move.  In Dr. Rajaratnam's arthroscopic shoulder surgery, no metal impalnts are used
    • Contraindicated implants: Some devices, such as certain heart pacemakers, nerve stimulators, and older brain aneurysm clips, are not safe for MRI scanners and are considered contraindications.
  • Image Distortion: Even with MRI-compatible implants, metal can cause distortions or "artifacts" in the images, which may make it harder for doctors to interpret the results, especially near the implant, let the physician who ordered the MRI and the  MRI technologist know
